The formal adoption of the village was conducted on Saturday 9th June 2018 and the inauguration of the adoption was marked by lighting the lamp by the dignitaries of REVA University and Shettigere village.

As part of the inaugural ceremony, REVA University celebrated World Environment Day by planting tree saplings by Honourable Chancellor Dr. P. Shyama Raju, Vice-Chancellor Dr. S.Y. Kulkarni and Registrar Dr. M. Dhanamjaya along with directors and staff members of REVA University. The students and teachers of Shettigere Government School and village panchayat members Roop Shivanna, Anand S.D and Smt. Lakshmi were present during the ceremony.

REVA started working in the village at the grass root level to identify various problems and solutions for the problems. Based on the list of the problems identified in the village, it was observed that the major concern of the village is health. Abuse of tobacco and liquor was prominent amongst the people and they are unaware of its consequences on their health. Since these hazardous products were available easily, an uncontrolled use of these products was prevalent amongst the villagers. As women are considered as submissive to their male counterparts, their concerns were not taken into consideration.

Expensive medical treatment was beyond the reach of the villagers. It was a huge challenge to bring the villagers together to attend medical checks or camps for treatment. Hence, it was decided to launch an awareness campaign amongst the villagers so that they will come to know the perilous effect of substance abuse.

It was easy for the University to garner the students for the awareness programme. The students of the University used various visual aids and screened the visuals in a commonplace in the village. With the help of these visual aids, REVA University decided to accomplish the task of creating awareness on the health, which is mainly focused on cancer.

REVA University has a very active Rotaract Club and NSS wing that helped us to use the social reach of clubs and NSS. Their social reach helps to bring in the awareness amongst the villagers about cancer that can be caused due to the continuous use of tobacco. On World Cancer Day, REVA Rotaract Club under the aegis of School of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE). The students conducted weekly health camps by involving doctors with various medical specialisations.

Faculty members and Rotary club members along with students volunteered the campaign. To initiate the campaign, the students and Rotarians contacted the Government hospital to ensure necessary support from their end. Pamphlets were printed with the date and venue details to gather village people at one place. These pamphlets were distributed among the villagers to create awareness and inform about the free treatment available at the Government Hospital, Yelahanka from 4th to 8th of February 2019. Awareness of the causes of different types of cancerwas also carried out among the villagers.

Students and faculty members along with the doctors interacted with the villagers to understand their problems related to health and hygiene. The volunteers educated them that the use of tobacco and liquor is the cause of their ill health. They also educated them about the importance of keeping their surroundings clean and avoiding open defecation. The volunteers also advised them about the significance of women hygiene and clean drinking water. An awareness rally was held across the village with the slogan “Fighting cancer on every step of the way”.

REVA University was successful to generate awareness amongst the villagers on gender and social issues such as literacy, health, hygiene, sanitation, clean drinking water, and livelihood options.

REVA is attempting to implement a voice-based farmer information system called “RaitaSnehi” that provides data on various schemes for farmers available at various websites. The user has to give a voice input into the system based on the choices available. The word recognition algorithm of the system recognises the word from the website on the parsed data and the details of the required data will read out to the farmer on demand. The prototype of this system is ready, which is helpful for the farmers of the village to get maximum assistance in the enhancement of their income.

Education is necessary for a healthy and hygienic living. With the awareness programmes conducted on health, hygiene and skilling, the villagers are following a healthy and hygienic life and most modern agricultural practices. With the help of skill development training, the economic status of the village also improved which in turn improved their quality of life.

  • REVA implemented various solutions for safe sanitation, personal hygiene and clean drinking water.
  • The volunteers trained the villagers to implement safe sanitation and water system.
  • The villagers also enhanced their knowledge on solid and liquid waste management, water conservation and purification methods, and rainwater harvesting.
  • The women in the village were educated on new technology and the importance of financial independence and savings.

The NCC and NSS units of REVA have been actively working with the village. NCC/NSS students went to the village and planted saplings along with the villagers. Apart from this, they also spent a day cleaning the village and trained the villagers on solid and liquid waste management.

University ambulance is used for various visits to the village. More than 50 students and faculty members from the School of ECE of REVA University conducted a cancer awareness campaign and medical camps with the support of Government

Hospital for 4 days. The volunteers also carried out awareness of effective utilisation of library resources and lab equipment, the importance of environmentalcleanliness, treatment facilities, first-aid kits and many more. The University has provided resources such as students, teachers and equipment for the awareness campaign, and all these resources are used judiciously and effectively. More than 300 villagers from Shettigere village attended the awareness programmes and benefited by the knowledge offered by experts.
