Student Development Programme Report on Intellectual Property Management (IPM) and Practices

The resource person was Dr. Y V S Lakshmi, IEEE Senior Member, Group Leader IPR, Marketing & KMG, Centre for Development of Telematics (CDoT), Bangalore.

Dr Lakshmi received M.Sc.Engg. and Ph.D. from ECE Dept , Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Completed basic course on IPR conducted by WIPO and P.G. Diploma in IPR Law from NLSIU, Bangalore. Gained more than twenty years’ experience in the Telecom Industry in Quality, Reliability, Failure Analysis, Corporate Functions, IPR, Training & Teaching, and technology marketing. Currently Group Leader IPR, Marketing & Knowledge Management group (Bangalore) at C-DOT, Bangalore, prior to CDOT worked at ITI Ltd. Bangalore.

Around 110 students (UG and PG) from the School of ECE attended the SDP.

The SDP focused on following key points:
1. IP rights, Patents 
2. What can be patented? 
3. Conditions of Patentability
4. Patent management
5. Patent information sources
6. Benefits of patent information
7. Examples of patents in nano-electronics, MEMS & solar cells 
8. Issues of Copyrights, Trade mark, Trade secret
9. The semiconductor integrated circuits layout-design act 2000 
10. Geographical indications

The interactive programme concluded in the form of a crossword quiz for the students. The students were given ample time to solve the cross word puzzle based on the IPR. In the interactive question answer session at the end, UG and PG students cleared their doubts successfully. The SDP on Intellectual Property Management (IPR) & Practices by Dr. Y V S Lakshmi, was highly applauded by the students and culminated in the incubation of knowledge about IPR among the UG and PG students.
