The growing importance of Applied Sciences

The growing importance of Applied Sciences

Introduction

Science has been an integral part of mankind and existence from time immemorial. With time, humans have understood science better, having been able to apply its knowledge practically in all varied forms. Mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, computers, astronomy, mechanics and what not?! All these fields have been growing rapidly since the intervention of 'Applied sciences'.

Applied Sciences and Basic Sciences: Know more

Many scientists like Issac Newton, C.V.Raman, Homi Bhabha, Albert Einstein have helped extend the knowledge of science through their analysis, phenomena, discoveries and inventions. The knowledge that science gives us is what we classify as 'Basic Science' whilst the application of this knowledge for practical purposes is called 'Applied Sciences'.

Basic Science discovers the underlying information to predict and perhaps explain and understand phenomena in the natural world.
Applied science uses this information as the means to achieve a particular practical result. This includes a broad range of applied science related fields, including engineering and medicine.

For instance, identifying a chronic disease and treating the same is science, while treating the illness through various ways and devices like X-ray, scan machines, operation devices, pacemaker, various health-related applications technology!

Mathematical formulas and theories would have remained in books unless astronomers, physicists used it in the technical aspects of launching a rocket. The light bulb was a great invention, but it didn’t change the world until there was a power grid providing electricity to every house.

Discovery of heat was science while steam engine was it's application.

Scientific studies & progress results into wonderful technologies!

Importance of Applied Sciences in today's world:
Applied sciences have taken over every aspect of life in the modern world. Every decision that is taken in the field of energy, conservation, agriculture, health, transportation, medicine, communication, defence, economics, leisure, and exploration is highly impacted by the applied sciences.

Medical sciences such as medical microbiology, apply biology toward medical information and innovations. Bio-technology, Medical electronics are other applications that enhance the basic science concepts. Furthermore, Applied sciences make use of formal sciences, that is nothing but the statistical methods which help in problem solving.

Importance of Applied Science hence is evident from the very scenario that speaking to people far away is just a phone call away, reaching thousands of kilometres in a few hours is no more a problem, treatment of chronic illness is no more a dream.

At REVA, the School of Applied Sciences played a crucial role in the development of Jeeva Setu – A low cost portable ventilator to help fight the nation against COVID-19. A team of professors and students from the school developed the ventilator which is designed to deliver 500 – 600 ml of air per breath and 15 – 18 breathes per minute, as per standards specified for COVID-19. To cater to the daily safety needs of all the house keeping staff and the faculty, the department of chemistry pro actively developed sanitizers which is being regularly used on a daily basis.

Technology is one of the major applications of science. Students from Applied sciences have the ability to test what they read at universities and are encouraged to do so.

Career with Applied Sciences
With the growing importance of Applied sciences in every field, colleges all over the world are offering degrees in the same starting from associate to doctoral levels. Ocean of career options opens up with this, catering to a wide variety of jobs.

Other than engineers, graduates of associate degree programs in applied sciences get jobs in health care, concrete manufacturing, wholesale electronics and consulting businesses, elderly home health care, pharmacy and more.

Registered Nurse, Dental Hygienist, Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, Radiation therapist, Chemical Technician, Physical therapist Assistant, Respiratory therapist, Administrative Assistant are few of the jobs that one can expect after getting an associate degree in applied sciences.

Applied sciences are important as they enable science to be more applicable in real life. Without applied sciences, great scientific discoveries may be limited as it only increases human knowledge, which is important but would remain unutilized.

At REVA, The School of Physical, Chemical and Biological Sciences (Applied Sciences) offers graduate and post graduate programs which are incredibly fascinating and practice oriented, is also conceived to conduct project oriented studies and research. It mainly aims to attract talented youth and train them to acquire knowledge and skills which are useful to industrial sector, research laboratories and educational institutions. The Academic insights gained through these comprehensive courses are efficiently linked to industry exposure.

Research based learning and Innovative practices are given precedence over theoretical studies.

The School has an active participation with:

  • Georgian College of Applied Arts and Technology, Ontario, Canada
  • Lakehead University, Canada
