The Department of Biotechnology, School of Applied Sciences organized an Awareness program on AIDS “What you should know about HIV and AIDS” on 22nd December 2022. The resource person for the session was Usha Shinde, Manager, Customer Relations, Cardiology, Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital, Vasanthnagar, Bangalore. The talk was conducted in APJ Hall, Science Block for all the first year M.Sc Biotechnology, Microbiology and Bioinformatics students. The session started with the speaker giving basic information about HIV Virus, mode of spread and how a person succumb to the infection. Resource person gave a clear insight of the causes, preventive measures and methods of detection of AIDS in patients using ELISA, RNA based methods, Rapid testing, Western blotting etc. The need of awareness on having safe sex and proper lifestyle for enhancing the immunity was also explained. Many case studies handled at the hospital were discussed. The talk was very unique in its own way wherein the students came to know about the causes, symptoms and treatment strategies pertaining to AIDS cases. Students as well as faculty members actively participated in the talk interacting with resource person. The talk was highly interesting and informative.
