Kho Kho is believed to have originated in Maharashtra, where it was played in a more primitive form known as Rathera, involving chasing and dodging. It was initially played on chariots (raths), which is how it got its name from the Sanskrit root 'Kho', meaning 'to go or chase'. It later evolved into a ground-based game. The modern version was standardized in 1914 at Deccan Gymkhana, Pune. In 1955, the Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) was formed, and the game gained national recognition and inclusion in school curriculums and sports events.
