School of Legal Studies, REVA Legal Aid Clinic in association with Karnataka State Legal Services Authority, Bengaluru, and Permanent Lok Adalat, organized a webinar on “Legal Awareness to Challenge the Covid-19”, on 15th May 2021, The objective of this webinar was to develop intuition among all the participants about the importance of LokAdalaths, one of the alternative dispute redressal mechanisms, and also about Karnataka State Legal Services Authority which is aimed to provide free and competent legal services to the weaker section of the society. sThis webinar stimulated all the participants to analyze and reflect the lesson learnt so far, the different aspects of COVID-19 at national and state levels. Mr.Ashwathanaryana, Chairman Permanent Lok Adalat, and Mr.H.Shashidhara Shetty, Member-Secretary, Karnataka State Legal Services Authority, Bengaluru were the key speakers of the webinar.
Mr.H.Shashidhara Shetty,Member-Secretary, Karnataka State Legal Services Authority, Bengaluru has given the insights about, the proactive implementation of comprehensive public health measures that has rapidly established in the state, with explosive outbreaks that grow at an exponential rate. In state, in which community transmission has become established, at risk of entering this phase of an epidemic,authorities adopted population-level distancing measures andmovement restrictions in addition to otherpublic health and health system measures to reduceexposure and suppress transmission. The Speaker has explained about Lok Adalat working towards reduction of cases pending before courts in taluks and districts, apart from the High Court in this Pandemic Juncture.
Mr.Aswathanarayana, Chairman, Permanent Lok Adalat addressed the students and faculty, with regard to free legal aid services such as legal advice, legal representation, and legal adjudication free of cost in the current Pandemic Situation. Further, emphasized on how the people with disabilities can assert their rights using such clinics in matters such as disability certification, employment and pension. They can also defend their rights regarding admission to hospitals, human rights violation, treatment, property issues and marital issues. The Speaker has given the insight about how the Legal aid services has extended its help to Women in issues like, sexual violence, domestic violence, and other property related issues. The resource person has also suggested that the Legal Aid Clinic need to be established at college and university level that can work towards uplifting the under privileged section of the society and equip them to avail the benefits of the different social welfare activities sponsored by the State and Central Government.
