How Students Choose Their Major A guide to choosing the right path

We all know the fact that choosing a University major is one of the most daunting and overwhelming decisions of life. Your entire professional life, or as you think, depends on the choice of subjects in the University years. The major is your designated or chosen field of study which you will be taking forward as a professional course. Since it is your first step towards your career, it will always remain a tough decision

How to choose a major?

While this one decision will always be dominated by a cloud of uncertainty,  we are here to help you out and make it easy for you in the coming academic session. Listed below are a few factors that will help you decide your subjects of study.

Career Paths

Some career options expect you to carve a path even before you enter that stream. A lot of professions do require a graduate degree to further excel in that domain. In these fields, choosing an undergraduate subject is important to define the future scope of study or specialisation. For example Pre-med students often choose a science major, while pre-law students benefit from social science and humanities courses. If your University allows, take a class or two or talk to students already enrolled in the courses before taking a plunge

Earning Potential:

Education is definitely a big investment. Hence calculating the ROI is a major factor for most of the students. The course should also pay you back. This is the reason, and as a few recent reports & researches show that most of the incoming University freshmen ultimately choose a major based on potential salary and benefits. University alumni, industry trends, can be a helpful source of information for students who are all set to explore the different areas of study or considering a change in their subjects or career stream. This may offer valuable insights and facilitate their decision making.

Strength & passion:

The love for a subject is often a bigger reason than anything else while choosing a major. Passion can take you places. If you love what you are studying, it would definitely mean more involvement and engagement in the subject and the entire course. Listen to your true calling and do not get influenced by what others are choosing. You can also turn to explore your extracurriculars, hobbies, and  experiences to identify your core strengths. If you are fond of photography, choose subjects related to design, journalism or fine arts.

Unsure about your career options ?

It’s normal to worry and be unsure about what to do with your life — many students feel that way at some point in their academic life. As we mentioned above it’s the most daunting decision. Fortunately, we are living in a wonderful era with a plethora of choices when it comes to academics and educational opportunities. You can begin exploring the basics. Introspect your own strengths, weaknesses & passion. Map it against your career goals…where would you like to see yourself a few years down the road ? What is your personality type? Do you like working with others? Getting an answer to these questions will help you in deciding your desired subjects and also chalking out a career path for yourself.

What If You Have Multiple Interests ?

Many of you must have been in a similar boat at some point. At this age, students are usually baffled with a lot of exposure and career choices. They are interested in career options more than one and want to achieve more in a limited timeframe. In such cases, we recommend discussing this with experienced teachers and professors in the domain. Talking to your seniors or alumni will also help. A lot of students also take up double majors or a minor subject which opens more doors for the future opportunities.
