A Studio-Led Colonial Built Heritage Investigation of Architecture and Craft of Mysore

The REVA School of Architecture organized an immersive field study documenting Mysore’s colonial-era structures, blending architectural analysis with craft preservation. Students investigated iconic sites like the Indo-Saracenic Jagmohan Palace, colonial-vernacular Devaraja Market, neo-Gothic St. Philomena’s Church, neoclassical Bangalore Town Hall, and the grand Mysore Palace. Through sketches, interviews, and technical drawings, the study decoded socio-cultural symbolism, documented endangered artisanal techniques (e.g., Mysore paintings, rosewood carving), and proposed revival strategies for modern integration. This initiative bridges historical craftsmanship with contemporary design, highlighting urban evolution and preservation challenges in Karnataka’s architectural legacy. The students analysed: Jagmohan Palace, Devaraja Market, St. Philomena’s Church, Bangalore Town Hall, Mysore Palace. with a focus on hybrid colonial styles (Indo-Saracenic, Neo-Gothic), craft documentation (woodwork, stained glass, stucco), and cultural symbolism. Infographics, annotated sketches, video interviews.
