‘Crisis and Conflict in the 21st Century: Responding to the Challenges of a Changing World’

The Department of Media Studies, School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, REVA University organized two day International Conference on 17th and 18th November 2022 on the most relevant theme in the current day time ‘Crisis and Conflict in the 21st Century: Responding to the Challenges of a Changing World’. The conference received overwhelming response with research papers from across India and overseas. The research papers presented revolved covered the areas of: Depiction of social media in crisis management in films, conflict and crisis in listening skills, media freedom in post war Srilanka, Political communication on social media, Media literacy, political polarisation, Recent War reporting by mainstream media, representation of religious nationalism, gender, LGBT and queer in social media and mainstream media, consumer behaviour, influencer marketing on online fashion enterprises, impact of Korean wave on Indian youth// Fake news through whatsapp, Media, communication and political mobilization, so on and so forth.

The cherry on top was meticulous presentations by the Undergraduate and Postgraduate students who showed enthusiasm in their area of research study.

The chief guest for the inaugural ceremony was the renowned Political Scientist, author and Vice Chancellor of Jagran Lakecity University, Bhopal Dr. Sandeep Shastri. Sir while delivering the keynote address on Crisis and conflict in the 21st century reflected upon the anxieties and aspirations of an emerging young India.

The two-day conference had three technical sessions chaired by Dr. Vahini Arvind, Bangalore University, Dr. Shamala, Central University, Tamil Nadu and Dr. Vasundara Priyadarshini, Bangalore University. The three-hour long technical sessions began with paper presentations followed with Q & A. The Chairperson of each session patiently stated their observations while giving valuable suggestions.

The two plenary sessions included talks by Dr. Srinivas Melkote, Professor Emeritus, Bowling Green State University, USA and Dr. Ramzy Baroud, Author, a syndicated columnist, Editor of Palestine Chronicle and a senior research fellow at Center for Islam and Global Affairs. Dr. Srinivas Melkote highlighted upon the importance of networking in communication, utilising social networks for progressive change. Dr.Ramzy Baroud reflected thoughts on information imbalance, cultural hegemony and how it is leading to crisis and conflict in International Communication.

The two days virtual conference which was conducted through MS teams was successful in terms of understanding, knowledge sharing, and critical analysis of research on the given topic.
