The Department of Psychology, School of Arts & Humanities, organised a guest lecture on the topic, “Introduction to Evolutionary Psychology” on 29th January 2020. The resource person was Ms. Aishwarya Iyer. She has done her Masters from the University of Glasgow, Scotland. She has extensively researched on mate preferences – related to evolutionary and social Psychology.
The resource person gave a brief overview about how human beings have evolved over a millennia. Later on, she related the evolutionary psychological perspectives to the prevailing socio cultural aspects such as gender identity and roles, social expectations etc. to sensitise students about the extent to which the role of biological and cognitive reasons have defined today’s man – woman relationships. The discussion provided food for thought to further expand the narrative of feminism, man-woman power relations in society as well as attempted to emphasise upon how both sexes are complementary to each other.
In short, Ms. Iyer contextualised the evolutionary perspective of Psychology to explain different facets of human relationships that range right from selection of a partner to acquiring social skills that are essentially required to attain a fulfilled life.
