The School of Arts and Humanities, REVA University organized a guest lecture on the topic “Qualitative Techniques in Media Research” on 27th January 2020. Students of BA-JEP IV semester and MA-JC II and IV semester attended the guest lecture as it was in conformity with their course on Media Research.
The guest speaker, Mr. Charan Tadepally, is the Associate Director of the South region at Nielson Company. He gave insights on various methods and approaches to qualitative research. He also explained how a qualitative research is different from a quantitative research. He gave plenty of examples and case studies including that of the ad campaigns of The Times of India and The Hindu’s attempts on strategically attacking each other’s news publishing approaches. By attending this lecture, students were able to understand the different methods involved in a qualitative research. Various goals and objectives of research were also addressed. By sharing his own experiences, Mr. Tadepally emphasized on how observation and ethnography are some of the widely used approaches for a qualitative research. He further spoke about the scope of research on online and traditional media content among various groups of viewers. This would aid content creators to make shows that are more relatable to them. The session ended with some interesting questions from curious students followed by detailed and insightful answers by the speaker. The lecture was interactive, informative and attention grabbing.
