Read voraciously, know deeply about society, and instill gender values at the root level: Shri Tejasvi Surya

REVA University witnessed a vibrant and enlightening dialogue with the eminent politician and the show stopper of Nyaya Darshana, Shri Tejasvi Surya Member of Parliament, who gave an enriching talk for the students and legal fraternity. Speaking during Nyaya Darshana, a social awareness campaign that contributes to the social development and betterment of society as organised by the School of Legal Studies in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals IV, V, and XI, his speech inspired the youth.

Quoting a few lines from his speech.

“If you want to be a litigating lawyer and if you don’t know society well, there’s no use in being one. It is important to know society when you are practising law in the real world. Hence there is a need to be a voracious reader, read anything and everything under the sky. He referred to a personal anecdote on how his father nurtured his reading skills and how they sat together and read newspapers. Further, he said, “This is the best time to expand your reading horizon. As students and torchbearers of the future, read deeply, intensely and passionately about society and this impacts your career in a big way.”

The students and faculty also engaged in a Question and Answer session with Shri Surya, where an intelligent exchange of discussion happened. In the volley of questions raised by the audience on the women’s workforce and the increasing number of crimes against women, his revert to it was quick: “Family”, he said, “plays a big role instilling values and respect in women. It all starts at home. Our rich Indian tradition is known for respecting women since time

immemorial. We need to instill these values right in the family and spread them throughout society.”

Shri Surya also talked about the importance of participating in competitions and how it contributes to learning beyond the classroom. He recollected how he had spent time with lawyers, law consultancies and other law experts to understand better about it. Shri Surya said that this is where the right learning happens.

Shri Surya is also hopeful for the next 25 years which is crucial for India’s growth trajectory. He believes that compared to the previous generation, the present generation will get more and innumerable opportunities. “In all the sectors, India is going to make an indelible mark. For that, the youth will play a big role.

“I believe that when you become a lawyer, you also become a man of character. You should always stick to integrity and make an impact in someone’s life,” Shri Surya concluded
