As part of the Architecture Design IV Studio, an expert lecture was conducted by Ar. Rama Raju where he spoke of the current situation and prevalent trends in rental housing in India, the factors that influence this type of housing and the various stakeholders involved. He informed us about the different initiatives that are in place when it comes to rental housing in India. He also shared valid examples of co-living spaces and ideal areas of interior spaces of housing units were discussed in the Indian context. Students discussed both the sites with him and explored different possibilities that could be introduced on the site. 

About the speaker:

Ar. Rama Raju is an architect and urban planner with a bachelor’s degree in Architecture and a master’s degree in Urban Planning from CEPT University, Ahmedabad, specializing in housing and has considerable professional experience in the fields of architecture, urban design, urban planning, and real estate.

At IIHS, he is a part of the Academics and Research team. His work is specially focused on rental housing, Real Estate Investment Trust (REITs), affordable housing, slum redevelopment and sustainable housing. His current research is on promoting Residential REITs to enhance the supply of rental housing in India, analyse and study the tenancy law in India and their impact on the rental market and assessing and prioritizing the policies for sustainable and green housing in India, and energy innovation in low-income government subsidized housing in India.

Prior to IIHS, he worked with Vestian Global on real estate market analysis and feasibility assessments for commercial, residential and industrial projects across Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad. He has also worked with Aarusha Home Pvt.Ltd on rental housing with a focus on students and single employee segment where he has piloted a rental housing project for blue-collared low-income industrial workers. He has also worked with the Urban Development and Urban Housing Department of Gujarat under the Affordable Housing Mission, where he worked as a state coordinator for Slum Free City Plan of Action and assisted Urban Local Bodies in in-situ development of slums and was involved in state policies and programmes related to Housing and Slum Development in the state of Gujarat. He has also worked with the Centre for Research Development Consultancy (CRDC-CEPT University) on urban design projects including on the new campus for the Sardar Patel Institute for Public Administration (SPIPA) in Ahmedabad and Kolawada Lake Front Development, Gandhinagar.
