Empowering Democracy: Insights into the 2024 General Elections

The 2024 General Elections in India are a historic event spanning from April 19th to June 1st, conducted in seven phases to select 543 Lok Sabha members. With a staggering 970 million eligible voters out of a population of 1.4 billion, this marks the largest-ever election in history, eclipsing even the 2019 Indian general election. Additionally, simultaneous elections for state legislative assemblies in Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Sikkim, as well as by-elections for 25 seats in 12 legislative assemblies, further amplify the significance of this electoral process. Results are slated to be announced on June 4th, 2024.

Different Phases of 2024 General Elections

The electoral schedule for the 2024 General Elections in India is as follows:
  • Phase 1: Phase 1 elections were held on April 19th in around 21 states and union territories. As per the Election Commission of India, the total polling percentage was nearly 64%. The states that went to polls in phase I of the Lok Sabha election were: Arunachal Pradesh (2 constituencies), Assam (5), Bihar (4), Chhattisgarh (1), Madhya Pradesh (6), Maharashtra (5), Manipur (2), Meghalaya (2), Mizoram (1), Nagaland (1), Rajasthan (12), Sikkim (1), Tamil Nadu (39), Tripura (1), Uttar Prdaesh (8), Uttarakhand (5), West Bengal (3), Andaman and Nicobar (1), J&K (1), Lakshadweep (1), Puducherry (1).
  • Phase 2: Starting on April 26th, with candidate nominations closing on April 4th. This phase encompasses 12 states and union territories. The states that are going to the poll in phase II of the Lok Sabha election are: Assam (5 constituencies), Bihar (5), Chhattisgarh (3), Karnataka (14), Kerala (20), Madhya Pradesh (7), Maharashtra (8), Manipur (1), Rajasthan (13), Tripura (1), Uttar Pradesh (8), West Bengal (3), J&K (1).
  • Phase 3: May 7th is the date for Phase 3, with nominations ending on April 19th. Twelve states and union territories will participate in this phase. The states that are going to the poll in phase III of the Lok Sabha election are: Assam (4 constituencies), Bihar (5), Chhattisgarh (7), Goa (2), Gujarat (26), Karnataka (14), Madhya Pradesh (8), Maharashtra (11), Uttar Pradesh (10), West Bengal (4), Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (2), J&K (1).
  • Phase 4: May 13th sees Phase 4 elections, and the deadline for nominations is April 25th. Ten states and union territories are involved in this phase. The states that are going to the poll in phase IV of the Lok Sabha election are: Andhra Pradesh (25 constituencies), Bihar (5), Jharkhand (4), Madhya Pradesh (8), Maharashtra (11), Odisha (4), Telangana (17), Uttar Pradesh (13), West Bengal (8), J&K (1).
  • Phase 5: Taking place on May 20th, nominations must be submitted by May 3rd. This phase includes eight states and union territories. The states that are going to the poll in phase V of the Lok Sabha election are: Bihar (5 constituencies), Jharkhand (3), Maharashtra (13), Odisha (5), Uttar Pradesh (14), West Bengal (7), J&K (1), Ladakh (1).
  • Phase 6: May 25th marks Phase 6 elections, with the nomination deadline on May 6th. Seven states and union territories are part of this phase. The states that are going to the poll in phase VI of the Lok Sabha election are: Bihar (8 constituencies), Haryana (10), Jharkhand (4), Odisha (6), Uttar Pradesh (14), West Bengal (8), Delhi (7).
  • Phase 7: June 1st hosts Phase 7 elections, and nominations close on May 14th. Eight states and union territories will participate in this final phase. The states that are going to the poll in phase VII of the Lok Sabha election are: Bihar (8 constituencies), Himachal Pradesh (4), Jharkhand (3), Odisha (6), Punjab (13), Uttar Pradesh (13), West Bengal (9), Chandigarh (1).
