With the country facing scorching summer heat and water scarcity, the message is clear: “Conserve water. Spread awareness and encourage others to do the same, for every drop counts."

REVA University, a trailblazer in higher education, has transformed into a Social Impact University with a dedicated focus on social responsibilities, in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Among its initiatives, water conservation stands out as a paramount priority, evidenced by a series of impactful activities implemented within the campus premises.

Taking significant strides towards sustainable living, REVA University has become a beacon of environmental stewardship, prioritising water conservation in its comprehensive approach to resource management. Amidst pressing global issues of water scarcity and climate change, REVA's dedication to responsible water usage serves as a testament to its commitment to forging a greener, more sustainable future. Through pioneering initiatives such as rainwater harvesting, wastewater recycling, and community awareness programs, REVA University sets an inspiring example, urging individuals to unite in safeguarding our most precious resource - water.

REVA University implements a well-structured water distribution system, with planned water collection throughout the campus. Distribution of water through pipes is executed ergonomically, ensuring efficient delivery. The campus is equipped with a rainwater capturing system, enhancing water availability during rainy seasons. Additionally, REVA emphasises the practice of water recycling, further optimising water usage and minimising wastage. Through these measures, REVA ensures a sustainable and resilient water distribution system, aligning with its commitment to environmental stewardship and resource conservation.

Rainwater Harvesting
The 139 rainwater harvesting pits at REVA University play a crucial role in water conservation efforts on campus. During the rainy season, these pits collect rainwater from rooftops, paved surfaces, and catchment areas. This collected rainwater is then stored in the pits, preventing runoff and wastage. The stored rainwater serves as a supplementary water source, especially during dry periods or water scarcity, reducing the dependence on external water sources like borewells or municipal supply. Moreover, the presence of these pits encourages stakeholders to use water judiciously, knowing that there is a limited supply available. Additionally, rainwater harvesting aids in groundwater recharge as excess rainwater percolates into the ground, replenishing groundwater reserves. Waste Water Recycling
REVA University operates a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) with a capacity of 1800 KL and treating 900 Kg of sewage on average. Approximately 80% of the total input, averaging 21,497 KL, undergoes treatment. The output yields around 18,000 KL of treated water. This treated water is efficiently utilised for various purposes, including watering grounds, flushing, and nurturing the nursery. Through effective wastewater recycling, REVA not only minimises environmental impact but also optimises resource utilisation, contributing to sustainable practices within the campus ecosystem.

Other measures for water conservation
REVA University implements various additional measures for water conservation, including efficient plumbing systems in buildings and the recycling of treated water. Treated water finds further utility in flushing toilets, thereby maximising its use. Faucets in toilets are designed to conserve water flow, with a standardised flow rate of 17 litres per minute provided through 3/4" pipes in residential areas, bathrooms, and kitchens. Implementing an efficient plumbing system is not only essential for conserving water but also for minimising energy consumption. This involves adopting measures such as installing low-flow toilets and replacing water lines to address leaks at their source, thereby saving water at its origin. At REVA University, with its expansive green campus, water usage outdoors is managed judiciously and effectively. This includes the deployment of smart irrigation systems that optimise the use of water for landscaping purposes, resulting in significant water savings in the long term.

Initiatives to Conserve Water at REVA University
The Danvantari Club of the School of Management Studies at REVA University organised a World Water Day Awareness Programme titled "Water for Peace" at the REVA Hostel block. The aim was to foster awareness about water conservation among students and faculty members. The event brought together participants to highlight the importance of conserving water resources. In addition to the awareness program, REVA University disseminated messages promoting water conservation through various channels. These included newsletters, YouTube videos, and emails.
