Film Studies

To enhance the learning experience in Media, Literature and Journalism, the School of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences provides Film Studies course as a part of the curriculum. By providing a comprehensive understanding of the art of filmmaking, REVA University takes a step further and unlocks the secrets of the media industry.

Through the Film Studies course, students learn about various aspects of film production, including cinematography, editing, screenwriting, direction, and more. Film studies courses help students develop critical skills for analysing and interpreting visual media. They learn how to decipher visual techniques, understand film language, and recognize the different narrative and stylistic elements used in cinema. At REVA University, the School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences offer courses like Documentary Production, Audio-visual Production, Film Studies, and Film Appreciation in both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Practical courses like Audio-Visual Production and Documentary Production under the aegis of Film Studies entail the honing of skills in film-making with the making of documentaries, short films, etc. on various issues like culture, nature, waste management, animal welfare, awareness of issues of LGBTQ, disability, tourism, etc.

Theoretical courses associated with cinema like Film Studies and Film Appreciation introduce students to various theoretical frameworks and critical approaches to analysing films. They learn about different film movements, genres, and styles, as well as key concepts like mise-en-scène, narrative structure, symbolism, and semiotics. This theoretical foundation enhances their ability to engage with and interpret films in a meaningful way.

Li & Le Film Festival

Student film festivals provide a platform for emerging filmmakers to showcase their work and gain recognition. It allows them to present their creative vision, storytelling skills, and technical abilities to a wider audience. The festival environment encourages networking and can lead to future collaborations or opportunities within the film industry. Li & Le, a student film festival is organised by the School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at REVA University annually.

Li & Le is the short form for Light and Lens is a platform for budding filmmakers across the universities and colleges in India to showcase their potential in filmmaking. Three editions of the Li & Le Film Festival had been conducted in the years 2019, 2020 and 2023. Li & Le Film Festival has been graced by noted personalities of the film industry like Shri. Yogaraj Bhat, renowned director, producer, screenwriter and lyricist, Shri. M G Srinivas, director and actor, T.S. Nagabharana, director of both parallel and mainstream cinemas, Prakash Belawadi, renowned actor, writer, journalist, trainer, Pradeepa Sivalingam radio jockey, journalist and the founder of SAKKATH studio, Smt. Kushboo Sundar, famous Indian actress and National Executive Council Member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Smt. Maya Sharma, Consultant Editor, NDTV and many more.

The film festival is one of REVA’s flagship events and REVA University invites other Universities and Colleges to collaborate with REVA to take this initiative forward in the years to come.
