World Dance Day, 29th April 2019

This year the School of Performing Arts at REVA University organized a World Dance Day programme on the 29th of April, 2019. The theme of this event, as decided by the International Dance Council, was “Dance & Spirituality”.

The morning began with a seminar by two expert speakers– Dr. Padmaja Suresh and Dr. YashodaThakore. They spoke extensively on the chosen theme and being eminent dancers themselves, their words made a huge impact on our students. We also had papers presented by our very own research scholars from the School of Performing Arts.

In the afternoon, we had special performances by troupes from outside the University. This event was graced by and presided over by the Honourable Chancellor, Dr. P. ShyamaRaju as well as our respected Vice-Chancellor and Registrar. We also had the Directors of all the departments present. The programme began with a Kathak presentation by the disciples of Guru Mysore Nagaraj. We then had a truly heart-rending Bharat Natyam recital by the visually-impaired artistes of Articulate Ability. The programme ended with a meticulous and delightful Bharat Natyam performance by the Bharatanjali dance troupe of renowned Guru B. Bhanumathi.

This year we were inspired to take dance to new and unusual places and so we had our Outreach programme, where we visited an old-age home – Little sisters of the poor - in the morning. Here we danced and sang for the inhabitants of the old-age home who were overjoyed to have us. The same evening, another team of our dancers went to the orphanage, Bosco Mane, and performed for the vivacious little wonders there. The children had a wonderful time interacting with our team there. The next day, continuing the spirit and celebration of World Dance Day, yet another team of our dancers went to Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology and performed for the patients and care-givers of the hospital. This World Dance Day truly was an overwhelming and yet, humbling experience for all of us in the School of Performing Arts.
